Recovery Media is a general term used to describe a series of CD's or DVD's that are produced by major computer manufacturers that allow for the speedy recovery of the computers operating system. These disks are primarily used as a last resort to repair a computer that has been severely corrupted and is no longer functioning at a useable level.
Computers that require the use of Recovery Media generally have suffered catastrophic software failure caused by the improper installation or removal of software or hardware. There are also countless viruses that can cause the same form of failures. in these cases it is recommended that all user data backed up to another source and the recovery media used.
Many computers today are being sold with the recovery media installed on a hidden or separate area of the hard drive to allow for easier access to the recovery process if needed.
